About Dorje Teas

Dorje Tea: A Second Chance for a 150-Year-Old Darjeeling Tea Garden

Some tea brands begin with a product idea. Dorje Tea began with a decision to save a tea garden. In 2021, brothers Sparsh and Shrey were faced with the possibility of their family's historic Selim Hill Tea Garden in Darjeeling being let go. The pandemic had disrupted business, export markets were difficult, and the numbers were pointing in one direction.

But Selim Hill was more than an asset on a spreadsheet. It represented nearly 150 years of Darjeeling tea history, 370 hectares of Himalayan landscape and the livelihoods of around 350 families from neighbouring villages.

The brothers asked their family for one opportunity to turn things around.

That second chance became Dorje Tea.

What Sets Dorje Teas Apart?

The name carries the spirit of what the brothers were trying to build.

Dorje means “thunder” in Tibetan, a fitting reference to Darjeeling, often interpreted as the “Land of Thunder.” For Sparsh and Shrey, it represented something powerful awakening again — an old tea garden finding a new voice and a new generation discovering Darjeeling tea and exploring estate-grown teas such as Dorje Autumn Flush Darjeeling Black Tea.

Dorje was created not simply to sell tea, but to rethink how one of India's most celebrated teas reaches the people who drink it.

Bringing Darjeeling Tea Back Home

For generations, some of the finest Darjeeling teas were produced primarily with international buyers in mind, travelling to markets across Europe, Japan, and the United States.

Dorje challenged that model with a simple question: why shouldn't Indian tea drinkers have easier access to exceptional Darjeeling tea grown in their own country?

The answer was an estate-direct approach designed to make authentic Darjeeling tea more accessible without losing the provenance and craftsmanship that make it special.

From loose-leaf Darjeeling tea and pyramid tea bags to convenient cold brews, Dorje has taken a traditional product and made it easier for a new generation of tea drinkers to explore.

The format may change. The origin doesn't.

Selim Hill — Where Every Dorje Tea Begins

At the centre of Dorje's story is Selim Hill Tea Garden, located in the Kurseong region of Darjeeling.

Established in the 1870s by British planter Henry Selim, the historic estate became part of the family's story in 1991. Spread across approximately 370 hectares, with around 170 hectares under tea cultivation, Selim Hill sits at elevations of roughly 3,500 feet in the Himalayan foothills.

Importantly, not every available piece of land has been converted into tea.

Large areas remain under forest and natural vegetation, helping preserve the biodiversity surrounding the estate. Native birds, wildlife, forests, tea bushes, and the people who work among them form part of the same living landscape.

The estate follows organic cultivation practices, placing the health of the land at the heart of the tea it produces.

From Selim Hill to the Cup

Provenance matters enormously with Darjeeling tea.

Dorje's teas are not simply associated with Darjeeling as a region — they have a home within a specific estate.

Tea leaves are harvested and processed at Selim Hill itself, keeping cultivation and tea making closely connected. From plucking and withering to rolling and drying, the transformation from fresh leaf into finished Darjeeling tea happens close to where the tea grows.

This is particularly meaningful when exploring seasonal teas such as Darjeeling First Flush, where freshness, harvest period, elevation, weather, and processing can all influence what eventually appears in the cup.

For tea drinkers increasingly interested in knowing which garden their tea comes from, Dorje makes origin an essential part of the experience.

Darjeeling Tea for a New Generation

Dorje respects the traditions of Darjeeling without treating them as untouchable.

The brand has experimented with formats that fit contemporary lifestyles while retaining estate-grown tea at their core. Traditional loose leaves sit alongside pyramid tea bags and cold-brew options, making Darjeeling approachable whether someone is an experienced tea drinker or tasting estate tea for the first time.

That philosophy addresses one of the biggest challenges facing premium Indian tea: heritage is valuable, but it also needs to remain relevant.

Dorje is trying to make the story of Darjeeling tea, seasonal flushes, tea gardens and origin easier to understand — and easier to drink.

The People Behind the Leaves

Selim Hill supports around 350 families across nearby villages, making the revival of the estate about much more than preserving old tea bushes.

Tea gardens are communities. Generations of workers carry knowledge of the land, seasons, plants, plucking, and tea making that cannot simply be recreated elsewhere.

Keeping Selim Hill alive therefore means helping preserve both a historic Darjeeling estate and the community connected with it.

It gives Dorje's idea of a “second chance” considerably more meaning.

Second Chance House

Perhaps nowhere is that philosophy more visible than at Second Chance House on the estate.

Once known as the Burra Bungalow and later used as the director's quarters and briefly as Selim Hill Resort, the house has been reimagined as a space where collaborators, artists, creators, and visitors can spend time at the garden.

People arrive, exchange ideas, create, talk, cook, write and often leave something of themselves behind.

Second Chance House reflects the larger Dorje philosophy beautifully: heritage does not have to remain frozen in the past to be preserved. Sometimes it needs to be given a new purpose.

More Than a Darjeeling Tea Brand

When someone drinks Dorje, there is a surprisingly large story behind those leaves.

There is Selim Hill, a tea estate dating back to the 1870s. There are Himalayan slopes and protected forest. There are hundreds of families connected to the garden. There are two brothers who chose to rethink the future rather than accept its closure.

And, ultimately, there is an attempt to bring authentic estate-grown Darjeeling tea closer to Indian tea drinkers.

For anyone exploring premium Darjeeling tea, organic Darjeeling tea, First Flush tea, estate-direct tea, or single-estate Indian tea, Dorje offers something increasingly valuable: the ability to know not only what is in your cup, but where it came from and why the garden behind it matters.

Dorje Tea is a story of Darjeeling, Selim Hill and the power of a second chance — told one cup at a time.
