Makaibari Tea Estate
Makaibari Tea Estate
Makaibari Tea Estate is one of the oldest and most iconic tea gardens in Darjeeling, producing world-renowned teas shaped by its unique Himalayan terroir. Established in the 1850s, it was among the first plantations in the region and today cultivates tea on just 500 of its 1,500 acres, preserving 70% as forest. This rare sub-temperate rainforest ecosystem supports rich biodiversity and sustains the estate through natural windbreaks and soil regeneration.
A pioneer in sustainability, Makaibari became one of the earliest estates to go fully organic in 1988 and integrates biodynamic and permaculture practices. Its historic factory—built of wood, bamboo, and cast iron—remains operational, reflecting living industrial heritage. Deeply community-driven, Makaibari also led Fairtrade initiatives, blending ecological stewardship, social responsibility, and exceptional tea craftsmanship.
